Academic results matter. But at Johnethel School, we have always believed that what a child becomes is just as important as what a child knows. Our commitment to values education is not a programme that runs once a week — it is woven into the fabric of everything we do, every single day.
What Do We Mean by Values Education?
Values education is the intentional effort to help children develop strong moral character — qualities like honesty, respect, kindness, responsibility, perseverance, and empathy. These are not abstract concepts we talk about on a poster. They are behaviours we model, reinforce, and celebrate throughout school life.
How It Looks in Practice
In our classrooms, teachers consistently acknowledge and reward positive character, not just academic performance. A child who helps a struggling classmate, who owns up to a mistake, or who shows patience in a difficult moment — these actions are noticed and affirmed.
Our school assemblies regularly feature stories, discussions, and reflections centred on values. Children are encouraged to think about how they treat others and why it matters.
We also involve parents. When values are reinforced at both school and home, the impact is far greater. We encourage families to have conversations about the same themes we are exploring in school.
Faith and Values
As a school with a Christian foundation, our values education is also informed by faith — not in a way that excludes anyone, but in a way that grounds our community in principles of love, service, and integrity. We want children to leave Johnethel not just prepared for exams, but prepared for life.
The Long View
The children in our classrooms today will be adults, professionals, parents, and leaders tomorrow. The values they internalise now will shape the decisions they make for the rest of their lives. That is a responsibility we take seriously, and it is why character development will always be central to the Johnethel experience.
